Invasion of the Data Snatchers

While you’re putting on your costume and getting ready for trick-or-treaters, imagine creatures spookier than any you will see tonight… new devices and technologies that are tracking your every move!

A world without privacy? It’scloser than you think.

Data snatchers?? They are NOT science fiction. And they’re closer than you think.
New technologies are making it easier for private companies and the government to learn about everything we do - in our homes, in our cars, in stores, and within our communities. As they collect vast amounts of data about us, things are getting truly spooky!
Isn't it time we regained control over our personal information?

New technologies  make it easier for private corporations and the government to access vast amounts of data about us. And the Internet of computers and phones is turning into the “Internet of Things.” Unless we take action, it can grow into a web of horrors.

Dia de los Muertos

Dia de los Muertos—the Day of the Dead—is a holiday celebrated on November 1. Although marked throughout Latin America, Dia de los Muertos is most strongly associated with Mexico, where the tradition originated.

Dia de los Muertos honors the dead with festivals and lively celebrations, a typically Latin American custom that combines indigenous Aztec ritual with Catholicism, brought to the region by Spanish conquistadores. (Dia de los Muertos is celebrated on All Saints Day and All Souls Day, minor holidays in the Catholic calendar.)

Assured that the dead would be insulted by mourning or sadness, Dia de los Muertos celebrates the lives of the deceased with food, drink, parties, and activities the dead enjoyed in life. Dia de los Muertos recognizes death as a natural part of the human experience, a continuum with birth, childhood, and growing up to become a contributing member of the community. On Dia de los Muertos, the dead are also a part of the community, awakened from their eternal sleep to share celebrations with their loved ones.  [emphasis added]

The most familiar symbol of Dia de los Muertos may be the calacas and calaveras(skeletons and skulls), which appear everywhere during the holiday: in candied sweets, as parade masks, as dolls. Calacas and calaveras are almost always portrayed as enjoying life, often in fancy clothes and entertaining situations.

October 29th is National Cat Day!

Let's paws for a moment and take in 13 reasons you love to hate your darling feline.

1. You can buy all the scratching posts in the pet store but your cat won't necessarily use it as its nail filer of choice. Box springs, rugs, fabric furniture all serve as things for them to nail.

2. Your cat knows when you are feeling under the weather and will stay by your side throughout the duration of a cold, flu or bad breakup.

3. Cats are territorial. They may frighten your friends. They may hiss at the pizza delivery person. They may take a swat at the dog of the house.

4. They purr when you pet them and it makes you feel needed, wanted, loved. Ah, contentment.

The End of October Doesn't Mean An End To Awareness!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month may be coming to a close at the end of October, but we must not forget that every day men, women and children seek safety and justice inside America's courts.

Sadly, from New York to California, victims of domestic violence are facing a rationing of justice. Court furlough days have resulted in backlogs and delayed temporary restraining orders. Crippling budget cuts mean courts must reduce their hours of operation or close altogether.

Turned away at shuttered courthouse doors, victims of domestic violence are left to fend for themselves.

In Oregon, "Jane" had to wait three days to file a Family Abuse Prevention Act Restraining Order because Friday was a designated court furlough day. In New Jersey, "Joe" sat outside a courtroom door for nearly five hours waiting to be heard while the increasing backlog of cases ultimately suspended civil and family court trials and delayed temporary restraining orders. And in Mississippi, children were left in limbo while safe custody and visitation orders took a back seat to devastating court budget cuts that delayed and postponed the administration of justice.

Lives are in danger, and we must act now. Our courts cannot do their part to protect families unless they are fully funded. Donate to Justice at Stake today by clicking HERE. Our courts must not be closed to the public.
