9 Very Real Benefits of Laughter

Laughter is medicine and science says there are real and tangible benefits associated with laughter.  So if you love laughter and crave comedy, maybe that’s just your body nudging you toward better health.

Here's Those 9 Very Real Reasons:

1.  It’s good for your heart!  One study showed that people who have heart disease tend to laugh less than people who don’t.  They also responded with less humor to normal life situations.  Humor is good for your heart!

2.  Helps fight cancer.  The Cancer Treatment Centers of America actually use laughter  therapy to boost immunity, relieve pain, and improve moods in cancer patients.

3.  Heals relationships.  One of the greatest benefits of laughter is that it brings people closer together.  It can relieve anger and anxiety while restoring positive feelings.  Laughter can break the tension in a  tough moment and pave the way for finding solutions to relationship problems.

4.  Makes work fun.  Humor in the workplace (appropriate humor, of course) is a great way to boost creativity and productivity, and strengthens teamwork and morale.

5.  Relieves stress.  It probably goes without saying, but it’s such an important benefit and it’s well worth the mention:  laughter is a huge stress reliever.  Stress is one of the top causes of modern disease, so this might be why laughter has so many health benefits.  It relieves tension and gets oxygen pumping through the whole body, which is exactly what you need when you are stressed out.

6.  Stops pain.  Laughter raises endorphins, chemicals in your brain that are tied to pain relief.  Researchers at Oxford University found a dose-related laughter effect – the more people laugh, the less pain they feel.

7.  Fights depression.  Everyone knows that laughter can lift your spirits, but it can go deeper than that.  Research shows that laughter aids depression recovery, and people who laugh more become depressed and anxious less often.  People who use humor as a coping mechanism  generally have a more positive view of life, which can help prevent feelings of depression.

8.  Boosts your immunity.  Laughter can improve immune system activity, while stimulating circulation and oxygen intake throughout the body.

9.  Sleep better.  A study in Japan showed that laughing more in the evening actually improved sleep quality.  So watch a little of your favorite sitcom or reading a funny book before bed might help you catch some more shut-eye.

$100 in 100 Hours!

To celebrate the American Cancer Society’s 100th Birthday – along with 100 years of saving lives – I’m raising $100 in 100 hours, through Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. I’m asking for your help to reach my goal.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation, uniting nearly 300 communities to finish the fight. Every breast cancer walk and event is an incredible and inspiring opportunity to honor those who have battled breast cancer, raise awareness about what we can do to reduce our breast cancer risk, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society fight the disease with research, information and services, and access to mammograms for women who need them.

One hundred years ago, the American Cancer Society started the fight of a lifetime – the fight against cancer. I’m working to reach my goal of $100 in 100 hours to help the American Cancer Society reach their goal to make this cancer’s last century. Please help me by donating to my Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

Message from Michelle Langbehn: Cancer Survivor

Last week when the government re-opened, thousands of furloughed employees who were struggling to get by without a paycheck rejoiced. I celebrated for another reason -- because thousands of people like me with cancer will be able to resume treatment and clinical trials through the National Institutes of Health.

I started a petition on Change.org when the government shut down shortly after I applied to enter a clinical trial for my cancer that was federally funded. Over 150,683 people signed -- including you -- giving a voice to people like me who were directly impacted by the shutdown.

Thanks to you and everyone who signed, my story was highlighted by news outlets like Reuters, The Washington Post, MSNBC and the BBC. By lifting up the voices of those who were hit hardest by the government shutdown, you and I contributed to the national outrage that pressured our nation's leaders to reach a deal and reopen as quickly as possible.

When this began, I thought I would be lucky to gather a few hundred signatures. To watch my petition grow into the tens of thousands was truly humbling. Now that the government has reopened, my hope is that the cancer patients who were waiting to receive treatment from the NIH have not been compromised and are soon able to acquire the assistance they desperately need.

I hope this episode will lead to more political cooperation and that politicians will begin to put the American people first. Thank you so much for helping my voice, and the voices of other cancer patients, be heard.

$1 Million in 1 Day!

Today is the first day of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and we want to make a big impact. We are so proud of the progress that has been made since the American Cancer Society started the fight against cancer 100 years ago, but we’re not finished yet. In fact, we are determined to make this cancer’s last century and finish the fight against breast cancer and all cancers.

That’s why our goal is to raise $1 Million in 1 Day for the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer program. Thanks to supporters like you, the Society is funding groundbreaking breast cancer research and providing critical support for those facing the disease.

Together, we have the power to kick October off in a big way!

Tomorrow, we’re asking our Making Strides community to come together in a powerful way to raise $1 Million in 1 Day.

A $20 donation could help provide free information and support for someone facing breast cancer or any cancer through our 24-hour toll-free hotline.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Why I am Making Strides

Because I know I will make a difference in the fight to end breast cancer.   And I know that by raising funds and walking in the American Cancer Society Making Strides Against Breast Cancer event, I will help save lives from breast cancer.

It is my firm belief that one day breast cancer will never steal another year from anyone's life. Making Strides is not only my opportunity to join my community to fight back against breast cancer, but it's also a way to inspire hope by raising funds and awareness to help those facing the disease.

Who I am Making Strides For

This is my opportunity to not just help raise needed funds, but to honor breast cancer survivors and to remember people we have lost.

I have signed up to walk and fundraise with Making Strides Against Breast Cancer. I hope you will consider joining my team and/or making a donation in support of my efforts.

Gilda's Club

Cancer affects everyone.  This is a sad but very true fact of life for many.

Gilda’s Club creates welcoming communities of free support for everyone living with cancer – men, women, teens and children – along with their families and friends. Our innovative program is an essential complement to medical care, providing networking and support groups, workshops, lectures and social activities, all free of charge.

Below is a little information on how the Club itself came about.

If you are interested in learning more about Gilda's Club or wish to be a member, please GOOGLE Gilda's Club for a location nearest you!

And please be sure to post on all your Social Networks!  Thanks!

About Gilda's Club:

Gilda Radner was an American comedian and actress, best known for her five years as part of the original cast of Saturday Night Live.    At the age of 42 Ms. Radner became an icon for public awareness of both detection and treatment of ovarian cancer.  A disease she herself succumbed to in late May of 1989.

It was Ms. Radner's dying wish to create a place where people with cancer could go to receive support. Through the efforts of  Gene Wilder (Gilda's husband) and Joanna Bull (Gilda's therapist), the first Gilda's Club was opened in New York City in 1995.

History of Gilda’s Club Worldwide:
Gilda’s Club was founded in 1991 by Joanna Bull, Gilda Radner’s cancer psychotherapist, together with Gilda’s husband, Gene Wilder, with the help of film critic Joel Siegel, actor/singer Mandy Patinkin and several of Gilda’s other friends.

The first Gilda’s Club, including a world wide training center, opened its signature red door in New York City in 1995.

The relationship between Gilda’s Club Worldwide and its affiliates is close but flexible.

-No annual dues are paid to Gilda’s Club Worldwide
-Money that is raised locally stays local
-Training is provided at the Gilda’s Club Worldwide Training Center
-Gilda’s Club Worldwide hosts an annual Affiliates Conference for networking and education.
