My 55th Birthday "OR" How Many Quotes Can An Empress Quote Before She Forgets What She's Talking About?

On July 25th I will be 55 years old.  Wow!  55 years old.  Quite remarkable really!  Even if I do say so myself.  And I do.     

Funny thing about my birthday these last few years.   Each time I have sat down to share my thoughts nothing happens.  It's like my mind goes completely blank.  It's not like I don't have anything to say.  Anyone of you that have read my articles posted here can attest to that!   And it's not that I have any issues talking about myself. My family and close friends can attest to that!   But for some odd reason when it comes to talking about my birthday I'm just lost.    

Well this year I am determined to post something--anything--with respect to my birthday.  I mean let's face facts here people.   My being born was an awesome event.  At least it was for me.   I had plans!  I had hopes and dreams!  I had a mission!  And then...everything else happened.  Everything but what I had planned that is.  Interestingly enough, the whole time I was growing up I kept thinking to myself...this is not what I signed up for.  THIS is not the way it's supposed to be going.  

I literally lived that life is what happens when you're busy doing something else thing.  Thank you John Lennon!

Now that my children are all grown and doing their own thing, I walk around with this deer caught in headlights look.  Yea, I've gotten a few things accomplished in my life.  But there is so much more I want to do.  I read about these people who set out on their paths much later in life.  While I admire them for going for it, I want to know where they get the energy to even do it!  For crissakes I can barely drag myself out of bed these days.  Can't get going until I've had at least two pots of coffee.  And what in the hell are all those aches and pains??!  For the love of Buddha!  I am hurting in places I didn't even know existed!  It's crazy!  Great!  Now I have that "I've fallen and can't get up" commercial playing in my head!!!

A few years back I could literally do 12 different things at once.  Now I consider myself lucky if I can remember 12 things!  I'm still trying to figure out how I can remember something that happened 50 years ago, but couldn't tell you what took place 5 minutes ago.  What the hell is up with that?

For example, I remember telling my daddy on my 5th birthday...I'm never gonna grow up!  And so far, I've kept that promise!  I may not have a choice in growing old, but I do have a choice about growing up!  Growing up is for people who just give up.  And I am not a giver upper!   My get up and gone might have got up and quit.  But I'll never grow up.  Not me!  No sireee!    Great!  Now I hear Mary Martin singing in my head!


I know I've gotten old when every sentence starts with...back when I was younger.  Seriously???!  Back when I was younger?  When did I get old?   To quote old Rose from the movie Titanic  "... And it looks the same as it did last time I saw it... The reflection's changed a bit."   Wonderful!  Now Celine Dion is singing in my head!  OY!

In my heart I'm still a youngster filled with so much hope and dreams.   And I know it ain't over 'til it's over!  I got lots more books to write, lots more sig tags to create and lots more people to meet and places to visit before I check out!

As long as there's coffee to drink I'll managed.   (And a little help from my friends).  Sheesh!  Now the Beatles are singing in my head.  Wait!  Someone's actually playing it!  Whew!  

At any rate, it's been a great journey so far.  *pauses.  Hears silence. Continues writing*   Seeing the road ahead, the sign posts...OH CRAP!  Now the Carpenters are singing We've Only Just Begun!  

Okay!  Okay!  that's it!

A Champion Has Been Chosen! (Excerpt from Children of the Luminaries Book One: The Coming Storm)

“It is done!” Mehtevas stated.

She'Sari looked at him with a mixture of curiosity and astonishment.  “You betroth the ultimate power so soon Master Mehtevas?”  It was more of a statement than an actual question.

“I have my reasons.”  Mehtevas smiled as he discreetly watched Ariadne, Fasbur and Matura whispering to each other.

She'Shari followed his gaze.  “They are not pleased with the decision.”

“Yes, well that is their choice, is it not?”

Just as She' Sari began to speak, a large red sphere swept through the room.  All but Mehtevas ducked and dodged the round red ball of light as it flew over their heads.  Hovering a moment above the center of the chamber, the sphere began to take a solid form.  In a matter of seconds a very tall dark-haired handsome man dressed in black robes stepped forth.

“Greetings esteemed members of The Pantheon…”  Looking to his left he continued, "Ariadne.”

“Greetings, Lord Demetrius!”  Mehtevas exclaimed heartily.

“You have made your choice?”  Demetrius asked with excitement.

“We have!”  Mehtevas motioned for Demetrius to step closer to the viewing globe.  “Behold!”

Demetrius’ huge smile quickly faded as he saw the image.  “You cannot be serious!”

“You see Mehtevas? Even he sees the error we have made.” Ariadne shouted.

Mehtevas put his arm around Demetrius’ broad shoulders.  “I realize you cannot see it now, but after some training and careful mentoring…”

Demetrius moved to one side.  “Lord Mehtevas you know how much I respect you, but I must protest.  This…this individual is more suited for the home and hearth, not the battlefield.”

Demetrius looked at the image once again and shook his head.  “No amount of training and mentoring could change that into a warrior!”  He put up both his hands and shook his head again.  “As much as it pains me, I find myself agreeing with Ariadne.  An error has surely been made.”

“My beloved friend, I assure you no error has been made.  You will see!”  Again, Mehtevas gestured towards the images appearing on the globe.  "Look beyond what you see here.  Beyond outward appearances.”  he urged.  “Do not be fooled by exterior beauty but instead use your power of discernment and see what lies deep inside."

Demetrius found himself mesmerized.  Taking in the energies emanating from the images, he could now feel there was something unique about this one.  More than strength and fortitude.  An energy pure and unfettered.  An energy he had not felt in eons now poured through the globe.  But there was something else.   What he could not yet comprehend.   He became lost in his thoughts for a moment.

“Yes!  Yes! " He finally agreed.  "But there will be much work involved in training this particular one."   Glancing slyly to his right, he added.  "And taking into consideration Ariadne is not known for ever being right.”  He chided with smug satisfaction, "I accept your offer to train and mentor this chosen one of The Pantheon!"  

Demetrius could not help but feel pleased with the angered look upon Ariadne’s face.  What a pitiful arrogant soul, he thought.  With renewed confidence Demetrius stepped closer to the viewing globe.  A big grin spread across his face.

“So when do I get to meet this champion of yours?”

Remember Me! (excerpt from Children of the Luminaries Book One: The Coming Storm)

Victory Standish found herself torn between the successful life she had been leading to the vague memories that persisted.  She felt out of touch with the reality she had been living.  The doctors claimed it was due to the head injuries sustained in the accident.  But Victory knew that wasn't the case.  Long before she had ran off that slippery road, she knew there was something missing.   She knew there was something she needed to do.  Had to do.

Cuckoo!

Sitting down on the foot of the bed, Victory thought about a story her grandma always told. Smiling she remembered how Helena would draw out scenes on the black wall to entertain young Victory.  But looking at the mural, she didn't recall it being so life-like.

Cuckoo!

“Stupid clock!”  Victory grumbled.

Remember!  The disembodied voice commanded.

Victory looked around.  “I’m doing my best,” she yelled back.  Her frustrated tone expressed emotions boiling inside of her.  Just as she was about to stand, Victory heard a rustling sound; followed by the sensation of someone jumping on the bed.

Cuckoo!

Slowly, Victory stretched her neck around.  Tears welled up as ghostly images formed.  Turning completely around, Victory allowed the past to unfold in her mind.

Remember me!  The voice persisted

Cuckoo!

Within seconds, Victory found herself transported back to her past.

“Tell me a story grandma!” a young Victory pleaded from under the covers.

Cuckoo!

Smiling, Helena patted the child’s leg.  “Alrighty!” she replied softly.  Leaning on the silver-headed cane for balance, the elderly woman rose from the bed, hobbling over to the high back rocker.  She paused for a moment as Snowball ran past.  He jumped on the bed, lying quietly beside the young girl.  Helena sighed falling into her favorite cushioned seat.

Cuckoo!

“Tell me the one about the Lunamanarees grandma!” Victory begged.

Helena chuckled.  Reaching into her pocket, she pulled out a single cigarette from her hidden pack of Kools™ and a small box of matches.  With a quick blue orange flash, the room lit up and in seconds she was blowing smoke rings.

“Luminaries.”  Helena softly corrected.  “They’re called Lu-ma-nare-ees”

Cuckoo!

“Okay, tell me about them grandma!”  Victory insisted.  “Please tell me the story!”

Children of the Luminaries Trilogy Characters: The Oracle

Throughout history there have been great women warriors.  Cleopatra, Artemisia I of Caria, Queen Boudicca, Gráinne Mhaol, Zenobia and Nakano Takeo...to name only a few.   Even in  modern day mythology you will find the likes of Wonder Woman, Xena, Elektra and Katniss Everdeen blazing the trail.

The main character of the Children of the Luminaries©™ trilogy presents us with a strong female presence.   She is not only the embodiment of the combined strength and attributes of all these historic brave women (both real and fictional), but a living tribute as well.

Like all heroes, The Oracle does not see herself as anyone's savior.  She only sees what must be done and she does it.  

The Oracle's  journey of self empowerment and acceptance, as chronicled in this trilogy,  reflects the on-going trials and tribulations that both  women and men all over the world experience on some level, in some way.  And it is because, and in spite of, all her doubts and fears  The Oracle is a representation of  all people, women & men alike,  from all walks of life. 

The Chosen One: Excerpt from Children of the Luminaries Book One: The Coming Storm

They stood together a short while watching the ripples in the water made by the warm breeze.  In the east, the sun made its slow descent.  In a few hours a new day would begin.  As they stood there in silence The Oracle pondered the dragon's words.  She was certain he was mistaken.   She shuddered as a cold chill tingled up her spine.  

"An omen!"  She mumbled to herself.

Finally, Demetrius broke the long silence.  “You cannot hide from your destiny, Oracle!"  He proclaimed, his baritone voice echoed all around.   "You are more than what you believe.  But you must believe!”  Demetrius waited for a response and received none.  He then continued, “I ask you this girl, will you choose aliveness even if there are no safe places?  Or will you choose deadness?”

Utterly bewildered by his words, The Oracle shook her head and made her way back toward Sabia.  “I am no warrior,” she repeated calmly.  “You are mistaken.”

“Yes, you are.  And I am not mistaken,” he called out.  “I do not make mistakes.”

She smiled and called back sardonically, “Yes, I know.  You are very wise and very, very old.”

“Make fun if you must, Oracle, but just remember it is the will of the Pantheon.”
 
She waved back to him and disappeared behind the trees where her beloved winged unicorn waited. 

Demetrius watched until The Oracle was completely out of sight.  He rose up and extended his front claws.  A red glow engulfed him.  His serpentine body began to transform.  In a matter of seconds he transformed into a man dressed in red attire with a black flowing cape.  His wavy, black hair brushed against his forehead and fell to his shoulders, solemn brown eyes watched as the winged unicorn soared into the darkening sky with his mistress holding tightly to his silvery mane. 

“I will be with you always, Oracle,” he said softly to himself.  Then quietly, without notice, he vanished.
