Kayla is the 15 year old girl  who went missing last Friday (August 30th) while waiting on her school bus.

FDA Approves Unique Stem Cell Therapy Trial in MS Patients

Stem cell research continues to excite the field of MS research as a new Phase I trial involving the use of stems cells as an Investigational New Drug (IND) in MS patients has been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  The small Phase I clinical trial will investigate the safety and efficacy of autologous, mesenchymal stems cell-derived neural progenitor cells (MSC-NPs) in the treatment of progressive MS.

Neural progenitor cells are cells that can develop into neurons and other nervous system cells, such as oligodendrocytes, encouraging neural repair and regeneration as evidenced in studies with mice (Harris, 2012).  Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are adult stem cells derived from bone marrow which can differentiate into other types of cells such as neural progenitor cells (NPCs).  Autologous mesenchymal stem cells are obtained from a person’s (or animal’s) own bone marrow.

Led by Saud Sadiq, MD and Violaine Harris, PhD, researchers at the Tisch MS Research Center, formerly known as the Multiple Sclerosis Research Center of New York (MSRCNY), will be recruiting approximately 20 progressive MS patients from the existing patient population of the International Multiple Sclerosis Management Practice (IMSMP), which is the research center’s clinical practice affiliate in Manhattan, to participate in this open label, clinical trial.  Enrollment has not yet begun.

Honor Jennifer Martel: Protect Victims of Abuse

27-year-old Jennifer Martel was a caring mom to a little girl. Working her way through college, Jennifer hoped to become an elementary school teacher. Jennifer's boyfriend had a long history of criminal activity, including domestic violence, yet was released on his own recognizance after smashing Jennifer's head into a mirror Tuesday, Aug. 13. 

Just two nights later, he was found covered in blood after stabbing Jennifer to death in the presence of their four-year-old daughter and neighbors.

While Massachusetts is at the forefront of the war against domestic violence, the recent murder of Jennifer Martel highlights a gaping flaw in the current system. Under M.G.L. 276 sec. 58A, offenders can be released on their own recognizance, without any bail set, within 24 hours of an assault. An emergency restraining ordered was issued against Jennifer's assailant, but since Jennifer did not appear in court the day after she was attacked, her assailant was released without bail on his on recognizance.

Females murdered by a current or former partner account for 30% of homicides against women each year. In many instances of intimate partner homicide, domestic violence is a precursor to murder. More often than not, victims of domestic violence do not take action against their abusers for a number of reasons, including fear of retaliation. Known abusers should not be allowed to walk free without bail within 24 hours of a repeat offense. Special concern should be warranted when there is a child in the home, as well. 

I am asking for your signature on this petition, in order to prompt the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to close the loophole that allows repeat, violent offenders to be released without immediate consequence, putting their victims and the public at risk.

Pennsylvania Hospital First To Treat "Internet Addiction"

A psychologist first coined the phrase "Internet addiction" in 1995, when the web was in its infancy. He meant it as a joke. But now, with the first hospital-based Internet addiction treatment center opening next week at the Behavioral Health Services at Bradford Regional Medical Center in Pennsylvania, Internet addiction is no longer considered a laughing matter.

The voluntary, 10-day in-patient treatment program will admit up to four people who have been diagnosed with severe Internet addiction. First, they'll undergo an extensive evaluation and a "digital detox" that prohibits phone, tablet or Internet use for at least 72 hours. Then they'll attend therapy sessions and educational seminars to help them get their Internet compulsion under control.

Selling Out? Or Just Marketing? Part 2 ~ Fast Bucks, Fame Monsters, Glory Seekers and Wrangling

What are you selling...exactly?    What is it that you want to bring to the world?  Why?  How much time and energy are you willing to put forth in doing it?  What are you willing to do to do what you want and enjoy?  Why?

Are you willing to forego any shortcuts in lieu of some actual hard work?  Are you willing, and most importantly...are you able?   Able to get focused, stay focused and go that extra mile?

So!  What is it you're selling again?  Exactly?  And why?

Do you have any  idea?   Time to get clear precious!    To help you along I'll ask you even more question. 

Are you looking to make a fast buck?  

Unless you live in the forest and  your name is Bambi, give it up.  Because there is No such animal as the "fast buck."    


But let's just say for argument sake that you were to make that "fast buck."  Guess what happens next?  Yep!  It fizzles out quicker than those cheap 4th of July sparklers you buy at some thrifty mart.  

Are you seeking fame and glory?

Like the "fast buck"  Fame & Glory  goes as quickly as it arrives.  Reason being, the public is  fickled beyond belief.    As soon as someone with a "shinier" presentation comes along, you're dropped like the proverbial hot potato.   

Are you wanting to reach more people?

Nice goal.  However, you will find yourself stretched to the breaking point.   Your client/customer is the most important person on earth.  And brother!  They know it too!    If you are unable to provide them the security of one-on-one interaction, then your best bet is to keep it down to a minimum.

While it's really super that you want to reach out and touch every single soul on the planet, it's not the best well thought idea.  Remember what I said about the public being beyond belief fickle?   Facing a population of disgruntled, unfulfilled, unsatisfied populace is never pretty.   All that you've worked for can sizzle out in a very short time if you don't hold up your end.

Not to mention, your message gets distorted in the process.  And too, there's one thing that most people overlook and that is...you will not resonate with everyone.       

Goals of reaching "everyone" may be a noble and lofty idea--it's just not the best idea.

Being honest with yourself is the first step.   Asking yourself questions like...

Do you have the stamina to tend to all the people you've reached personally?  Am I more interested in my clients as individuals or just how much I sell?  

And if you're being honest.  The answer is going to be:  You don't have the stamina it takes to handle thousands upon thousands of clients...personally.  In fact, if your goal is to reach the entire world and have thousands upon thousands of clients...you won't. 

Makes me tired just thinking about all those people needing and wanting my help! 

Your best bet is to keep it all down to a minimum.    Quality!  Not Quantity!  Still the way to go!
