Acceptance -- A Special Mother's Day Gift For You!

One of the most important lessons I've learned as a mother is acceptance.   It isn't easy accepting opinions that you weren't/aren't good enough.  Especially when those particular opinions come from your offspring.  But if you're honest with yourself, you will accept it and move on.  Which I have.

I'll be the first to admit that I was not the greatest mother who ever lived.  Wasn't the worst either.  But still wasn't the best.  And guess what?  I ... don't ... CARE!  I did the best I could at the time. If that wasn't/isn't good enough for my hell spawn or my family or friends, etc. Then so be it.  I own my mistakes.  Take responsibility for them.   I do not offer up any excuses or attempts to justify myself.  I accept all that I did, didn't do, say, didn't say.   In the end...the only opinions that matter are mine and  that of my Creators.   Everyone else's opinions are just background noise.

Acceptance, you see,  is the saving grace of all those who managed to fuck up on some level, in some way, shape or form!  Acceptance isn't easy.  Then again, no one said it would be!

Many of you reading this may remember watching The Carol Burnette Show.  It was a weekly variety television show that brought us the skit  Mama's Family (this skit later  became a weekly TV show).   This family was the living embodiment of dysfunctional families.  They reflected our family very well.  As I'm sure they did many families.  The show's finale gave us Eunice (the eldest daughter and main character in the skit) going to a therapist.  It was a bittersweet moment that stuck with me.  Not so much that it was an end to my favorite Saturday night show, but that it provided me with a phrase that proved throughout the years to be very useful.   And that phrase was ...

Would've, could've and should've are words we don't use, because when we do, they only give us the blues!

Pretty damn profound for a comedy show!

I know there are a lot of you moms (and dads) out there beating yourselves up over the belief you're  not being good enough.   But you are.  Yea, you might fuck it up here and there.  But what's the human experience without the fuck ups?  Do the best you can and give the guilt trips a rest already.   Acceptance isn't easy.  No one said it would be!

Believe it or not, children are people.  Not only do they have their own path to walk, they have their own shitty opinions.   We  as parents are here to guide and teach them.  We are not here to control every little aspect of their lives.  And we certainly have no control over their thought processes. We are here to allow them to have their own point of view--but at the same time--show them that facts are very important in order to form an intelligent opinion.  We are here to teach our  Children to be  responsible for their own actions.  Unfortunately, not all children will accept that lesson right away--if at all.  And that too is something we, as parents, must accept.

If the kid decides you and your entire way of believing and thinking stinks... then so be it!    Let it go!  Let it be!  They're people!  Just like you.  And they have opinions -- maybe not the most intelligent well thought out opinion--but they are entitled to them nonetheless.  Your job is to not take it personal.  Because it isn't.  Acceptance of that isn't easy.  No one said it would be!

And for the child who decides that they have no responsibility in how they act and  speak.  You know the one.  That kid who blames the parent--particularly the mother--for everything that goes wrong in their life.  To them I say thank you for the ego boost -- but you give me way too much credit...and power.  Sorry kid!  It doesn't work that way.  And that's too bad really.  Because I swear to you IF I had that kind of power -- you wouldn't be such a little dick.  Probably not even breathing!   Now would you?  No.  You would not!     I brought you into this world!  I can't take you .... Sorry.  I had a flashback there!

Acceptance!  Not easy.  No one said it would be!  Gross understatement.

For all you moms out there striving to be perfect ... knock it off!  You're not perfect.  You never will be.  The only thing you can be is accepting of all your flaws and fuck ups.  Do your best that you know to do...then let it go and let it be.

For those of you still struggling with acceptance, I leave you with this little gem from The Carol Burnette Show ...

Would've, could've and should've are words we don't use, because when we do, they only give us the blues!

Louisville Metro Solid Waste Keeping The Christmas Spirit Alive!

HAD to share this with all of you.  It's a true story!  Happened yesterday (Wednesday 12/14/16) here in Louisville, Kentucky.

Louisville Metro Solid Waste workers paid a visit to Wheatley Elementary School yesterday.  Kids love those big orange garbage trucks folks!  No lie!  Now why did they show up?  Because they care.  Do we really need any other reason than that?  Seriously!  And folks...it was COLD out there (still is)!  But the crews showed up...for the kids!   Pretty cool, eh?  (No pun intended *LOL*)

The school received an email from a parent after the event which I am sharing below...

Today was an experience that I will never forget.  When I turned the corner onto the school's street, I was in shock.  I had absolutely no idea what was going on.  I was thinking, are they working on the street?  What is going on?  They were all honking their horns and smiling and looking like they were having fun just being there.  When Xavier and I walked inside the school and were greeted with a sea of men and the majority of them being black men, I felt a sense of pride just swelling so big that I could have burst out into tears.  Seeing men from city workers, police officers, teachers, fraternities, fathers, and grandfathers all smiling and telling my son we are here for you.  I just can't explain the happiness that I felt!

These are the men that very rarely get recognition on the evening news.  These are the stories that aren't told to show that yes, our black men do show up for us.  Yes, they do take care of their children.  Yes, we have men that do positive things in our communities and simply just care.  I just felt so proud to see this and that THIS is the school that my children attend and I'm proud of Wheatley and their staff and faculty.

When I got to work, I had to text my mom and sister about the most amazing experience that I witnessed.  My sister replied back that it brought her to tears and she wish she had been there.  I just wanted to let you know that I appreciated each and every one of those men taking time out of their busy lives to do this for my sons and all the Wheatley children.  I just wanted to say, thank you to the Mr. Bunton and all of Wheatley!!

P.S. please ignore any grammatical errors :)

NaNoWriMo! Ready....Set....WRITE!

Starting on my NaNoWriMo Today!  whoo hooo!   Writing a novel in 30 days!  Haven't done this in a couple of years--kinda rusty.  So here goes NOTHING!  *LOL*

A witch killer has come to Louisville.  The first kill.  A coven of four young women,  all in their early twenties, along with their animal familiars are found dead on the banks of the Ohio.  Their throats slit in a manner of a skilled surgeon.  The second kill.  Twelve hours later, a coven devoted to the cat Goddess Bast, and all their familiars, are  found dead.  Their bodies carefully laid out around a statue of Bast the Cat Goddess in the clearing on the Anderson farm on the east side of town.

There had been no trace evidence.  The victims had all been killed in another location, cleaned, dressed and then carefully laid out  specifically where they had been found.   It wasn't until the second kill the authorities was provided with motive.  But still no witnesses.  At least none they were aware of.   None that they even noticed.  Patricia Wells,  the pretty little blonde who hiked the trails of the Anderson farm daily,   was completely unaware there was a witness.   Even after discovering the bodies, Patricia still had no idea.   Jon Downs, the lead homicide detective,  with all his years of experience and skills was unaware there was a witness.  Jackie Harper the forensic technician who meticulously combed through the crime scene was unaware there was a witness.  Unbeknownst to them all the sole witness was there.  Right in front of them.

But how could they know?  They were unbelievers.  They would not--could not accept the miracle of what had occurred just hours after the witch hunter had finished laying out the lifeless bodies.  How would they have been able to accept the fact that just before the sun broke over the horizon, as she lay dying the High Priestess of the second coven managed to cast a spell  that sent her spirit into her dead Siamese cat?    They were all too sensible,  too logical,  for any of that hocus pocus.

Unnoticed, the witness sat high atop the statue watching with detached interest the crime scene specialists moving about below.   She knew the clues they so desperately were seeking would not be found.  Only the witness knew where the clues were hidden.   More importantly,  the witness knew she had a little over  twelve hours before the next coven would be killed.  The witch hunter had explained it all before ending her previous life.

The sadness that overwhelmed her was now replaced with sheer determination.  Mourning her beloved coven would have to wait.  Rising to her feet, the witness tilted her head to one side as the man in a blue jumpsuit pulled the zipper of the black  bag over the body of Terri Rhodes.   In that moment, the last shred of loss for her former self began to fade.

Leaping to the ground, the witness knew what she had to do now.  She didn't know how or even where to look.   The witness only knew that one way or the other, she had to find the one person who could stop the witch hunter...Teddy Mitchell.
