9/11 ~ Never Forget

LIFE.com presents the 25 most stirring, visceral photographs from that day, featuring pictures from the likes of James Nachtwey, Joe Raedle, Spencer Platt, Mario Tama, and other celebrated photojournalists (and one intrepid amateur).

New World Trade Center In New York Becoming a Reality!

Construction cranes work between Four World Trade Center, left, and One World Trade Center, right, Sept. 8, in New York. The new World Trade Center is becoming a reality, with a museum commemorating the attacks and two office towers where thousands of people will work, set to open within the next year.

FDA: Stop Discriminating Against Gays Who Want To Donate Blood!

Advances in technology and the understanding of HIV/AIDS have come a long way. The fact of the matter is that blood donations are safest and most effective when using rational, scientifically-based deferral periods that are applied fairly and consistently among blood donors who engage in similar risk activities.  These screening strategies provide an inclusive, internationally recognized means for keeping blood supplies safe.

In fact, the American Medical Association and the American Red Cross are both in support of a reevaluation of the lifetime ban of gay men from donating blood.  And most recently, over eighty-two Democratic and Republican lawmakers in the U.S. House and U.S. Senate have asked for the reevaluation.

We are behind in our policies in comparison with other countries.  Both Canada and the UK in recent years have lifted their lifetime ban restrictions. Regardless, blood donations save lives, and although I take issue with the FDA's policy, the communal need for an adequate and safe blood supply cannot be ignored. To prevent a blood drive on the grounds of public policy would be to place the citizens of Campbell and my community in danger.  Ultimately, public policy can be solved over time, while an unpredictable act of nature can warrant an immediate need for a blood supply.

If You’re Gonna Kill a Grizzly Bear, Don’t Pose for a Photo With Its Decapitated Head

*WARNING*
GRAPHIC PICTURE

A man poses for a photograph with a decapitated grizzly bear.

Photo Here (WARNING:  GRAPHIC)
For Joe nobody, this is more than enough to kindle one heckuva' Internet firestorm. But when the poser is a professional hockey player who expresses zero remorse for shooting and killing the bear, and then actually doubles down on his love of sport hunting, well, the web explodes.
Such is the predicament currently facing Minnesota Wild defenseman Clayton Stoner.
"I grew up hunting and fishing in British Columbia and continue to enjoy spending time with my family outdoors," said Stoner, in a statement released in an attempt to quell the uproar after this photo was leaked earlier this week. "I love to hunt and fish and will continue to do so with my family and friends in British Columbia."
According to B.C. hunting regulations, the kill was legit. Stoner applied for a permit (through a limited lottery), received a grizzly bear license, and then shot the bear legally on a hunt with his father and uncle.

8 Year Old Boy from Moore Oklahoma Receives "Unique" Punishment!

This sounds like something my mother would have done!    I'm pretty darn sure I would have done the same as well.    Personally, I'm glad to see parents taking a staunch stance like this.

A fine example.  One  that maybe our Judicial System should invoke nation-wide?  Ya think?

From Moore, Oklahoma:

An 8-year-old boy from Moore had a unique punishment after school yesterday.

Malachi Peterson got into a fight with another boy at school. Malachi's mother says he initiated the fight over a girl.   So his mom took the matter into her own hands.

Malachi had to stand on a street corner with a sign saying, "I picked a fight at school because I am a bully."

"First off, there's no reason for him to be all about a girl right now," Janie Peterson said. "Second off, assault is assault whether you're eight or 88, and I'm not going to put up with it."

Several parents stopped and talked to Malachi and his mom. Many of them said that this was good parenting.
